چکیده

Ventilation scintigraphy is a well-established adjunct to perfusion lung imaging in the diagnosis of pulmonary thromboembolus (PE). Although PE may be diagnosed with a standard chest radiograph and perfusion scintigraphy, the findings may be largely nonspecific due to the many types oflung pathology that result in perfusion defects. The specificity of the perfusion (Q) study may be substantially increased with the addition of ventilation (V) scintigraphy, which allows one to differentiate perfusion defects due toPE (VQ mismatch) from those resulting from obstructive lung disease (VQ match). Ventilation scintigraphy is performed at most institutions with a radioactive gas, usually xenon-133 (1 33Xe), xenon-127 (1 27Xe), or krypton-81m (81mKr). More recently, however, radiolabeled aerosols have evolved as an accepted alternative to gas tracer techniques to evaluate regional ventilation. This article reviews the clinical uses, advantages, and disadvantages of gas and aerosol ventilation agents. A more in-depth discussion of aerosols is given due in part to the increasing use of this particular tracer to evaluate regional ventilation.

Nurses' perceptions of education on invasive mechanical ventilation.

BACKGROUND Intensive care units (ICUs) encompass advanced clinical management and technology, mandating continuing education for nurses to maintain competency. This study examined nurses' perceptions of current education on invasive mechanical ventilation in an Australian ICU. METHODS Qualitative data were obtained from five optional open-ended questions as part of a larger 30-item cross-sect...

Radioation Protect during the Ventilation Scintigraphy of Tc99m DTPA Radioaerosol in Pediatric Application

Lung ventilation-perfusion scintigraphy is of great value for the management of patients with both primary lung disease and heart disease, by proving pathophysiological information of importance for the diagnosis, follow-up and functional evaluation of the patients. Krypton 81m radioactive gas is preferable for pediatric application due to its short half-life. However, the rubidium-krypton 81m ...

Ventilation/perfusion lung scintigraphy. Multiple applications besides pulmonary embolism.

Ventilation/perfusion scintigraphy is the diagnostic tool of choice for detection and monitoring of pulmonary embolism. However, the knowledge on its value for other or concurrent pathologies is poor. In this review scintigraphic characteristics of the main pathologies, interpretation and artefacts are described. Together with the understanding of pathophysiology of the lung, the potential gain...

Regional ventilation/perfusion mismatch pattern in patient with Swyer James (MacLeod's) syndrome

Swyer James (McLeod's) syndrome (SJMS) is an uncommon disease, which occurs as a result of childhood bronchiolitis obliterans. Patients may not be diagnosed until later in their life. A 46-year-old man underwent ventilation/perfusion scintigraphy for acute onset of dyspnea. The scan showed markedly diminished ventilation and perfusion unilaterally on the right middle and inferior lobes. However...
